Thunder Bay’s artistic spirit came alive at CAHEP’s Art of the Mushroom event this fall, where more than 450 community members gathered at the Baggage Building Arts Centre for an evening of art, discovery, and connection. The two-day event, part of Ontario Culture Days, transformed the space into a whimsical world of locally crafted mushrooms, each one a symbol of creativity and collaboration.
A Community Grown from Art
The Art of the Mushroom project invited local artists, families, and community members to design and paint their own ceramic mushrooms. Each creation reflected a unique story, collectively showcasing Thunder Bay’s rich artistic diversity. Under the guidance of artist Patty Guerrieri in partnership with The Hive, participants worked together to bring the vision to life, blending sculpture, storytelling, and public art in a way that made creativity accessible to all ages.
CAHEP’s Artistic Director, Christine Battle, shared that the project was “about celebrating the magic that happens when art moves beyond gallery walls and into the hands of our community.”
From Gallery to Scavenger Hunt
Following the exhibition, the excitement continued with an Art of the Mushroom Scavenger Hunt, held on October 11th. Over 150 handcrafted mushrooms were hidden throughout Marina Park and Thunder Bay’s downtown core, inviting families to explore local spaces in search of these miniature works of art. Each mushroom included a laminated card with a QR code, linking to a digital gallery and event information, merging art with technology in a fun and interactive experience.
This creative scavenger hunt not only brought art into everyday spaces but also deepened community engagement by connecting residents, artists, and visitors through shared discovery.
A Lasting Impact
The Art of the Mushroom was more than an event; it was a community movement that reflected Thunder Bay’s vibrant creative culture. With strong attendance, enthusiastic participation, and heartfelt feedback from attendees, CAHEP is already looking forward to expanding this initiative in future years.
As one participant shared, “It’s incredible to see so many people come together to create something so joyful. It reminds you that art truly belongs to everyone.”
